Nature is a Maybe
May 27th, 2010
In Nature is a Maybe, on now at the Gow Langsford Gallery emerging photographer Simon Devitt brings together a collection of photographs that detail the spaces we inhabit. While working largely within the realm of traditional architectural photography (as seen on the pages of Urbis, Architecture NZ and ProDesign), Devitt's images exploit the physical features of his [...]
Taking aim
May 27th, 2010
Housing two advertising agencies in one building, albeit under the same parent company, can provide a few design challenges. RTA Studio recently undertook such a project with AIM Proximity. Photos: Becky Nunes. Advertising agencies have had a number of heydays – the 50s, the 80s (up to ’87, of course), perhaps the late 90s and early 00s (up to ’09, perhaps). [...]
Semi-Permanent: on the way
May 24th, 2010
You might not have realised – yesterday's rain was quite distracting – but Semi-Permanent tickets have gone on sale. The line-up thus far is looking good – confirmed so far are the intriguingly named Light Surgeons, New York-based typographer, illustrator and designer Jessica Hische (those are her dropcaps below), graphic designer Adrian Shaugnessy from London, and New Zealand's own father and son [...]

May 17th, 2010
Ironbank, the new steel-clad commercial building on Auckland’s K’ Road, has received the 2010 New Zealand Institute of Architects’ award for the year’s best building. The mixed-use building, designed by RTA Studio for Samson Corporation, beat out some strong competition, in particular from Jasmax’s NZI Building on Fanshawe Steet, Auckland. Fourteen other projects were also [...]

Modern Opera
May 14th, 2010
Opera Kitchen, bringing together the best of the Hawkes Bay. Photos: Brian Culy. Cover story from issue 106 with additional images. Some wag once declared that music with dinner is an insult both to the cook and the violinist. That’s ok, because at Opera Kitchen the music is next door, in the big room – the refurbished [...]
That's Barcamp, Not Bandcamp
May 13th, 2010
Ludwig Wendzich explains the history of Barcamp, coming soon to Auckland. Barcamp started in Palo Alto in America during 2005 as a spin-off of the invitation only Foocamp, organised by O'Reilly Media. New Zealand's own Nat Torkington hosts the other Foocamp in the world, Kiwifoo, and like the original Foocamp it's also invite only. These events [...]
Teeing Off
May 11th, 2010
The online T-shirt market is a pretty competitive place, so it pays to have a point of difference. Stephen Richardson, onetime contributor to last year's ProDesign/Hallensteins T-shirt initiative, seems to be carving himself an online niche. Richardson (or Richard… son) has launched a new online project called Parinto. What sets Parinto aside from the rest seems to be [...]
