International Society of Typographic Designers student awards
ISTD winners from Massey and Katie Taylor talk rescheduled.
The Greenspace creative director Katie Taylor talking on spatial typography — Wellington, at Massey College of Creative Arts, Friday 30 April at 5.30 pm.
Nick Kapica, from Massey College of Creative Arts, reported yesterday that the International Society of Typographic Designers (ISTD) student awards took place as planned despite European airspace chaos caused by a cloud of volcanic ash preventing guest speaker Katie Taylor reaching Wellington. As the Icelandic volcano is calming down and European airspace has re-opened, Taylor will give her talk on Friday 30 April at 5.30 pm in the Theatrette, Museum Building on Buckle Street. Taylor, creative director at The Greenspace, London, will discuss spatial typography through projects she has worked on. Taylor is also scheduled to speak at an upcoming Designers Institute event – Designers Speak, in Auckland.

Kapica says that Massey University students were particularly successful in the international assessment scheme initiated by the society – "scooping 6 of the 12 Australasian awards made".
"Taryn Bell and Erin Ross both successfully reached the high standard expected, Tim Denee and Emma Stone were awarded a Merit and Tessa Gourley and Lesley Gilliam received Commendations, the highest level of award possible," he says.
Speaking in place of Taylor, three Massey lecturers explored spatial typography. Kapica, an ISTD board member, presented a wayfinding project for a university in Berlin which his studio SV Associates completed before he moved to Wellington to teach typography, information design and spatial typography at Massey University.
Annette O'Sullivan, ISTD member and lecturer to the successful Massey students, shared her recent typographic discoveries from sheep stations in the South Island – fascinating research into historic stencil letter forms telling a story of early brand identity and communication systems. Matthijs Siljee completed the trio, with insights into spatial typography with an excursion – using his 'holiday photos' he explored how space can be an instrument of communication, providing evidence that type can be space, and space can replace type completely.
